Why do some football players cut their socks?
If you watch professional football matches, you will sometimes notice that players have cut their socks. This can be small holes at the back of the calf or a sock where the foot part has been removed.
There are several different reasons why players do this. Some cut holes in their socks to make them more comfortable, while others cut them to be able to use grip socks in their boots.
Both have become more common in modern football.
Holes in socks to reduce pressure
One of the most common reasons professional players cut holes in their socks is to reduce pressure around the calf.
Football socks can sometimes fit very tightly around the calf muscle. If the fabric is too tight, it can feel uncomfortable during a match.
By cutting small holes in the back of the sock, the fabric can stretch more, which can make the socks more comfortable and allow for better freedom of movement.
This is why you sometimes see professional players with several small holes in the back of their socks.
Some players also cut their socks into sleeves
Another reason why some players cut their socks is to be able to use grip socks in their boots.
Instead of using a regular football sock with a foot, some players cut off the foot part of the sock. The upper part then acts as a sleeve over the shin.
This type of socks is often called:
-
football sleeves
-
cut socks
-
pre-cut socks
Sleeves are worn over the shin, while grip socks are used in the boots.
Grip socks in boots
When players use sleeves or cut socks, they often use grip socks in their boots.
Grip socks have small silicone or rubber dots under the sole, which can help reduce slipping in football boots. This can provide a more stable feeling during movements such as sprints, turns, and stops.

Tape keeps socks in place
When players use grip socks with sleeves or cut socks, many also use sports tape.
The tape is typically placed at the transition between sleeves and grip socks.
A common setup in modern football
A typical setup for many players today can look like this:
-
Grip socks in boots
-
Sleeves / cut socks / pre-cut socks over the shin
-
Sports tape at the transition between the socks
-
Mini shin guards under the socks
This setup is used by many players because it can provide a stable and comfortable feeling during play.
